The 42nd Annual General Meeting 2000

The 42nd Annual General Meeting of the Hong Kong Library Association was held at the Prince Hotel on 7 December 2000.  More than 70 members and friends attended the meeting.  After the quorum was formed, Ms. Lucinda Wong, President for the Year 2000, declared the meeting open.  [Please click for the AGM Agenda]  The HKLA saw a busy but fruitful year at the dawn of the new Millennium.   In the past year, many activities were organized to enhance members' professional skills and promote our professional image in society.  [Please click for Report of the Council]  With members' consent, a new category of Student Membership was established..  However, the proposed new category of Retired Membership was pending for further deliberation.  Mr. Tommy Yeung, Associate Librarian of Lingnan University, was elected President for the Year 2001. [Please click for the Address of President-Elect]  Because several Council Members would step down after years of dedicated service, Anita Chu, Catherine Kwok, Gary Lo, Venia Mak, Frederick Ng and Kin-pang Yam were nominated to fill the vacancies..  The fine tradition of HKLA has been carrying on for 42 years.  With the new Council in place, we are sure that this tradition will continue and members' interests will also be best served.

The highlight of the event was the keynote address given by Professor Enoch Young.  Prof. Young is the Director of the School of Professional and Continuing Education, the University of Hong Kong.  The Association was much honoured to invite him to share with us the development of SPACE and its future directions.  Prof. Young's talk entitled "Toward a Learning Society- HKU SPACE & Lifelong Learning" was very informative and it covered all major developments of HKU SPACE.  Prof. Young also kindly agreed to share his insights with members who could not attend the AGM.  [Please click for Prof. Young's Speech]  As the guest of honour, Prof. Young presented the H.A. Rydings Awards and certificates to graduates of the Certificate Courses for Library Assistants and diplomas to graduates of the Diploma in Librarianship course.  The Heleni Linton Bursary went to Ms. S.Y. Wong this year.  It was encouraging to see so many outstanding library colleagues pursuing formal training to better equip themselves for library work.

Two professional librarians, Ms. Lucinda Wong and Mr. Y.C. Wan, both from the University of Hong Kong Libraries, fulfilled the requirements for the HKLA Fellowship.  Dr. Kan Lai Bing, one of the earliest members of the Association, conferred the honour to Ms. Wong and Mr. Wan in recognition of their long-term commitment to library services in Hong Kong.

The Prince Hotel was chosen as the venue for the last two AGMs, a good reason being that the hotel always offered a sumptuous buffet dinner.  Amid the pleasant setting, members and friends exchanged lively conversations while enjoying the good food.  The AGM provided a precious opportunities for librarians from various sectors to come together.  It no doubt marked the climax of HKLA's activities in the Year 2000.
