Message from the President

May I take this opportunity to thank you for your support to the Association.  In the AGM held on 7 December 2000, a new Council was elected.  The Council and myself wish to listen to your needs and expectations and serve your best interest.  Please feel free to relay your ideas and concerns to us (email: hkla@hkla.org).  We shall try our best to address them.

The visit to the newly opened Film Archive on 24 February kicked off the HKLA programme this year.  The visit was interesting and informative.  If you could not join us in the visit, you should not miss the report covered in this issue.  Following this visit, we successfully secured Baptist University Library's consent to allow our members to join its Staff Development Programme held on 6 and 7 March.  Renowned overseas speakers from the U.S. and Taiwan shared with us their views on collection development, changing roles of academic librarians, and the different library management systems in the U.S. and China.

As you are probably aware, the Hong Kong Central Library will be open soon.  It symbolizes the importance of library services to the society and the city's commitment to information provision to the public.  We are delighted that the Public Libraries are considering to organize a preview visit for our members before its Grand Opening.  In terms of regional cooperation, we are now working on a tour to Taiwan.  Later this year, the Guangdong Library Society, Macau Library Association and HKLA will jointly organize an annual meeting to share our views and experience.  With so many activities ahead of us, the year 2001 will definitely be a rewarding year for the HKLA.

Email has greatly enhanced our communication of news and events to members.  You will be notified of the above forthcoming programmes in due course.  We value your active participation.  If you have any friends and colleagues who are not yet members of HKLA, please let us know.  We will be more than happy to invite them to join us.

President
