Collections Archivist (at the rank of Assistant Librarian I) (Ref: 504628)
Applications are invited for appointment as Collections Archivist (at the rank of Assistant Librarian I) in the University Libraries (Ref.: 504628), to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory performance.
Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in archives and records management, public history, or Library Science focusing on archival studies, or a combination of relevant education and work experience, with at least 5 years’ experience in processing archival collections and preparing finding aids. Professional qualifications such as Certified Archivist (CA) of the Academy of Certified Archivist (ACA), Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) of the Society of American Archivist (SAA), or equivalent are preferable. They should have the following essential qualities and skills:
- knowledge of efficient processing procedures for larger collections following the principle of ‘More Product, Less Process’;
- familiarity with records management concepts and principles as well as archival theory and practice;
- excellent written and spoken English and Chinese (preferably Cantonese);
- knowledge of archival standards, especially OAIS, DACS, ISAD(G) and ISO;
- working knowledge of appraising, acquiring and preserving born-digital and digitised records (for instance: e-mails, digital imaging, content management, web archiving and metadata such as XML, EAD, EAC, etc.);
- a high level of adaptability to new technology and the ability to learn quickly, work effectively and diplomatically in diverse groups and within a small unit, especially with general public;
- excellent interpersonal skills to assist departments within the University and donors outside of the University in records transfer; and
- familiarity with ArchivesSpace and giving regular trainings.
Experience in processing and working with photographic, audio-visual, and electronic collections; demonstrated knowledge of and experience in digital preservation and data curation; and demonstrated knowledge of HKSAR laws and ordinances that affect records management and archives are advantages but not essential.
Under the supervision of the Head of Archives and Special Collections and working within a team environment, the appointee is responsible for the overall administration of the University Archives collections in all formats relating to the history of The University of Hong Kong. He/She is responsible for acquiring, processing and making available the materials documenting the history and functions of the University. He/She will also actively document and develop the collections according to the Collection Policy, searching for and acquiring the most significant materials of the HKU family. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.
