Responsibilities:

  • Perform a wide variety of duties at the library service counter, such as circulating/locating library materials, answering inquiries, providing assistance and support to users in the use of the facilities and equipment, and processing books;
  • Perform shelf-reading and shelving of library materials according to standard library classification systems on a regular basis to ensure that assigned areas are neat and orderly facilitate convenient access to books on shelves;
  • Assist in library projects, such as library renovation project (book resensitising, book deselection and collection relocation), book digitisation project (book scanning), library digital project (data processing), etc.;
  • Provide front-line service counter shift duties in the evenings, on weekends, and on public holidays as assigned;
  • Troubleshoot minor problems for PCs, printers, equipment, copiers, etc.;
  • Undertake any other duties and/or contribute to occasional tasks as assigned by their supervisor, the Deputy University Librarian, or the University Librarian as necessary; and
  • Maintain a welcoming environment in the library by enforcing library regulations and upholding standards of user etiquette.

Requirements:

  • Good written and oral communication skills in both English and Chinese (including Putonghua);
  • Good working knowledge of the circulation module of the Library’s integrated management system (i.e. Alma) is preferred;
  • Thorough understanding of library call number systems, especially LC Classification and Chinese Library Classification (中國圖書館分類法, CLC) is preferred;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to handle users’ inquiries, suggestions, complaints, etc. patiently, courteously and tactfully;
  • Fundamental skills in locating library materials in the online library discovery service (i.e. Primo) is preferred;
  • Understanding of essential elements in a bibliographic citation to library materials;
  • Good working knowledge of operating & troubleshooting PCs, scanners, printers, photocopiers, etc.;
  • Knowledge in Chinese input method Entry, Canva, Microsoft Teams & Microsoft Word, Excel etc.; and
  • A strong emphasis on punctuality, reliability, and responsibility is essential for this role.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
