Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is looking for an experienced, innovative and dynamic leader to assume the position of University Librarian.

The University

Founded in 1956, HKBU strives to become a leading research-led liberal arts University in Asia for the world delivering academic and research excellence in a caring, creative and global culture.  HKBU has a student population of around 11,000 and a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes up to the doctoral level.  Currently, the University has an academic and teaching staff strength of about 1,000.  Beyond Hong Kong, the University has a joint campus with Beijing Normal University running a unique liberal arts college in Zhuhai, the United International College, as well as research centres in other parts of China.

The Library

The University Library at HKBU provides robust support for the teaching, learning, research and service missions of the University through the provision of quality collections, outstanding services, and a variety of collaborative and partnership programmes in the area, region, and the world.  The Library sustains and develops a comprehensive collection of electronic and print materials, primarily in Chinese and English.  In recent years, the Library has emphasised the development of its electronic collections and currently provides access to over 400 databases, more than 185,000 e-journals, and in excess of 1.4 million e-book titles.  Its physical collections include over 1 million print volumes and multimedia items.  The Library also provides digital scholarship and research support services and plays a major role in the University’s integrated research information and management system (IRIMS) that collects, preserves, and disseminates the research and scholarly output of the University community.  For more information on the Library, please visit our website or homepage at http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/library.

The Role

The appointee should offer strategic leadership to the Library, including management oversight of all library operations in order to ensure the continued successful planning and implementation of the University’s strategic growth and technological directions.  Key operational objectives will be leadership and the effective management of budget, staffing, services, information and physical resources, flexible learning spaces, to optimise the application of information technology in the delivery of services, strategic deployment of IT in library services and ensure that a high level of services is provided to teaching, research and learning endeavours, to advocate for the Library’s partnership role on campus and in the region, to lead in support of scholarly research including a demonstrated awareness of trends in scholarly communication and the development of print and digital collections, and to build a strong team environment that supports all staff in the Library.

Reporting to the Provost, the responsibilities of the University Librarian will include strategic planning, development of the Library with respect to traditional materials and new technology, maintaining inter-library communications and services, ensuring the provision of high-standard services to users, stock, space and financial management.  There will be a close collaboration between the Library and other information service providers in the University, e-learning, information technology in forming end-to-end information services for a quality learning environment for students.

The Person

The successful candidate should be a self-motivated professional who advocates a high standard of performance, with an emphasis on productivity, efficiency and quality of services.  He/She should have at least an MLS or equivalent qualification and possess extensive experience in academic library services.  In-depth knowledge of information technology and the ability to translate that knowledge into creative and innovative services to support teaching and research are essential.  The right candidate must have a commitment to user satisfaction and demonstrate excellent interpersonal relations and communication skills and a progressive management style.  A successful track record of experience at the senior management level with vision, foresight and strategic leadership is essential.

Appointment Terms:

The initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract of three years. Re-appointment thereafter will be subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding.
