Assistant Librarian I (carrying the job title of ‘Open Science Librarian’), Research & Learning Support – (240000AN)

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Library is seeking a motivated, creative, visionary and collaborative person to lead, develop and support Open Science initiatives in the CUHK Library to foster the culture of openness, inclusiveness and equity in scientific research within CUHK and society as a whole.

Applicants should have (i) a good university degree plus a postgraduate qualification in Librarianship and Information Science or related discipline; (ii) normally a minimum of six years’ relevant professional experience, including three years at a supervisory level; (iii) sound knowledge and understanding of Open Science trends and development; (iv) sound knowledge and understanding of the research life cycle in a University setting; (v) excellent written and oral communication skills; (vi) a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within the Library, with faculty members and university administrative departments; and (vii) a high level of practical IT skills. Proficiency in English and Chinese is desirable. A good working knowledge of commercial publishing, including handling licence agreements is preferred.

Reporting to the Head of Research & Learning Services, the appointee will be assigned to the Research Support Department. Duties include (a) developing and promoting the principles and good practices of open science in CUHK; (b) initiating and supporting Library’s Open Access (OA) publishing pilots and OA platform experiments with various partners, such as The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press; (c) advocating for Open Science development and culture in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area; (d) organising and coordinating Library’s Open Science events with different stakeholders, including Faculty Champions in CUHK; (e) serving as a contact point and ambassador of the CUHK Library for community engagement; (f) leading on Citizen Science Project involvement; (g) coordinating and raising awareness of open access, open educational resources and open data initiatives of the CUHK Library, including preparing training materials and toolkits; and (h) other tasks as assigned. Shift duties in the evenings, at weekends or on holidays at library helpdesks are required.

Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for two years, renewable subject to mutual agreement.

Computer Technician II – (24000089)

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Library invites applications for a Computer Technician II.

The Learning Garden is a technology-rich learning environment equipped with computer workstations, high-performance multimedia workstations designed for film editing and graphic design, as well as comprehensive 3D printing and scanning facilities. The MakerSpace provides Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) facilities, creative media production space for video and VR content as well as
maker workspace equipped with various production tools in the Learning Garden.

Reporting to the Learning Services Librarian, the appointee will be assigned to the Learning Services Department of the University Library. Duties include (a) providing technical support for the MakerSpace, including 3D printing and scanning, laser cutting, UV printing, AR and VR services as well as the computing equipment of the Learning Garden; (b) answering frontline IT and MakerSpace-related technical enquiries from Library users and referring as necessary; (c) assisting in the testing and implementation of learning software and tools; (d) providing training and documentation in use of the learning/research commons facilities to both users and library staff; (e) liaising with suppliers; (f) assisting in special and ad-hoc projects; and (g) other tasks as assigned. Shift duties in the evenings, at weekends or on holidays at library helpdesks are required.

Applicants should have (i) a Bachelor’s degree or Higher Diploma in IT, Creative Media or other related disciplines from a recognised university or technical institute; (ii) proven skills to support multimedia computing and equipment; (iii) strong working knowledge of at least one of the following multimedia editing software packages: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Final Cut Pro and/or Premier; (iv)
knowledge of digital fabrication workflows (CAD for 3D printing and 3D scanning); (v) a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese; (vi) the ability to work independently, collaboratively with other colleagues and as part of project teams; and (vii) excellent interpersonal and presentation skills combined with a customer-focused approach. Knowledge in AR and VR applications will be advantageous.

Appointment will initially be made on a 2-year contract with contract-end gratuity, renewable subject to mutual agreement.
