The Chinese University of Hong Kong Library invites applications for a post of Assistant Librarian II for the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) at CUHK’s Graduate Law Centre in Admiralty.

Reporting to the Law Librarian, the appointee will be assigned to LRC. Duties include (a) managing the LRC collection and services, and supervising the small team of LRC staff; (b) providing reference and research consultation services to staff and students at the LRC; (c) creating and delivering user education programmes at the LRC and on campus; (d) developing subject specific library instructional and promotional materials both online and print; (e) liaising with academic and administrative staff of the Faculty of Law; and (f) other duties as assigned. Shift duties in the evenings, at weekends or on holidays at library helpdesks are required.

Applicants should have (i) a good university degree plus a postgraduate qualification in librarianship and information science, or related discipline; (ii) normally a minimum of three years of post-qualification relevant experience, preferably in Law Library, at a professional or senior paraprofessional level; (iii) a strong service-oriented approach; (iv) reference and library instruction experience; and (v) excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in Chinese and English is desirable.

Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for two years, renewable subject to mutual agreement.

The appointee will be initially assigned to the Learning Services Department of the CUHK Library. The Learning Garden is a technology-rich learning environment equipped with computer workstations, high-performance multimedia workstations designed for film editing and graphic design, as well as comprehensive 3D printing and scanning facilities. The MakerSpace provides AR and VR facilities, creative media production space for video and VR content as well as maker workspace equipped with various production tools in the Learning Garden. Major duties include (a) providing front-line enquiry, counter and roving services; (b) offering clerical and administrative support to the Learning Garden and MakerSpace; (c) supporting events and workshops; (d) assisting users with the operation of MakerSpace equipment; (e) assisting in creating or maintaining library guides and instructional materials; and (f) performing other tasks as assigned. Shift duties in the evenings, at weekends or on holidays are required.

Applicants should have (i) completed secondary education; (ii) Grade E or above in at least 5 subjects in HKCEE, including Chinese and English (Minimum Grade C for Syllabus A), OR any combination of results in at least 5 HKDSE subjects (including Level 2 or above in Chinese and English): Level 2 or above in NSS subjects, “Attained” or above in ApL subjects (subject to a maximum of 2 subjects), and Grade E or above in Other Language subjects; (iii) a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese; (iv) strong interpersonal skills and good customer service attitude; (v) the willingness to learn new skills, and work independently and as a team member; and (vi) good computer skills, including the use of MS Office applications and Chinese word-processing. Relevant work experience in libraries, including the use of library management system, is preferred.

The appointee(s) will be assigned to the User Services Department. Duties include (a) providing front-line enquiry, counter and roving services to users in a courteous, helpful and efficient manner; (b) providing clerical support to user services and ad hoc projects; (c) assisting in maintaining an orderly, pleasant and safe study environment; (d) updating library webpages and publicity materials; (e) assisting in collation of statistical and financial information; (f) ensuring the Library collections are orderly and tidily displayed; and (g) performing other duties as assigned. Shift duties in the evenings, at weekends or on holidays are required.

Applicants should have (i) completed secondary education; (ii) Grade E/Level 2 or above in at least 5 subjects in HKCEE, including Chinese and English (Syllabus B, or at least Grade C in Syllabus A); OR any combination of results in at least 5 HKDSE subjects (including Level 2 or above in Chinese and English): Level 2 or above in NSS subjects, “Attained” or above in ApL subjects (subject to a maximum of 2 subjects), and Grade E or above in Other Language subjects; (iii) a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese; (iv) strong interpersonal and good customer service skills; (v) the ability to work both independently and as part of a team; and (vi) good computer skills, including the use of MS Office applications and Chinese word-processing.
